La Geria

A unique landscape in the world of wine cultivation in volcanic ash

La Geria is a whim of nature, a unique landscape in the world of wine cultivation in volcanic ash. These vineyards are found throughout the south of Lanzarote.

During the Timanfaya volcanic eruptions, a large blanket of volcanic ash covered the south of the island. This ash is unique in that it was suitable as arable land.

The winemakers on the island didn’t let this opportunity pass them by, as they took advantage of the land to cultivate vines, producing top-quality wine that is unique in the world. Wine born from a volcano.

Wine and Ash

The magic comes from the porosity of the volcanic ash, which allows it to absorb moisture and allow the vine to grow.

The crops rarely need water, nor do they even need to be watered – the humidity of the night is enough. This is ideal in Lanzarote, where rain is scarce, and the weather is warm.

As a result, several wineries have been established throughout La Geria, benefiting from its land to build their vineyards and produce first-rate wine which also has the exotic attraction of having been grown among volcanic ash.
